Dear Sven-E

This is a gorgeous site; well done. My interest is in whether people who study film sound ever consider the needs of film-goers with less than 20/20 hearing. I went to see 'Noise' recently (a highly recommended new Australian film). I was especially interested because it was concerned, to a degree, about hearing (tinnitus), and I believed that therefore it might deal with sound considerately. (I have moderate hearing loss and wear state-of-the-art hearing aids.)

In fact, I was able hear/understand less than 10% of the dialogue (about as much as I could manage of Brokeback Mountain). The problem is, only people with '20/20' hearing can manage the sound in modern movies. All the incredible sound technology seems to be wasted as they go for 'reality' effects of high background noise, along with mumbling, talking very quickly, broad accents, and hushed tones. Worst, is that sometimes you pick up a fair bit of the speech, but the voice drops at the 'punch line' (so to speak) and so the effort of hearing was for nought. There were a few laughs in the movie, but I did not get the drift in any of them. It is sooooo frustrating.

Sorry this email is so long, but I'd love a response.

Enrapturing site -- I feel I've been dead to the depth of film sound so far! However, I was hoping to find out how to capture acceptable sound when recording with an amateur set-up, like mini DV or another camcorder. Just saw a short film festival with friends and figured we could become weekend warriors of the film world, but upon review of some test tapes, we realized sound is our main (though not only) problem. Thanks for any help in advance!

I would love to read about the sound in way more detailed than the use of "high-resolution" microphones. Thanks to anyone who can help!

Hi Sven

Your site is wonderful. I use it as a resource for teaching my sound students at Humber College, Toronto, Canada.

I also learn a great deal myself everytime I visit, which is often.

Unfortunately, of late, the site goes all yellow and becomes unavailable when I try to access it from the left. I seem to be able to access from the right until I go to the "Sections" area. I am using a Mac OSX 10.3.6

Hopefully you can fix this bug soon, so I can visit even more often!

Thanks for the great service to the sound community.

Katherine

I am awed by the amount of work that you have put in to pull all of these resources together. I was searching for some resources to use in class - I teach film production on the college level. I was frustrated because most of what I was finding was the technical/software type websites. My students cover that in another class I was looking for ways to integrate the creative aspects into their projects. This site is going to keep me busy for a long time! Thank you so much for sharing your passion.

Hey, Sven-Elmer, great site. I fell into doing theatrical sound design a couple of years ago (after years as a musician and sound man) and hadn't had much luck finding good resources up to this point - hadn't really thought about looking into the film-making side of it. The sounds and their uses are similar, just a bit more restrictive because of the acoustics in a mainly-acoustical theatre environment. I'm finding lots of good tips on your site - and some nice affirmations that my sonic instincts have been pretty good too!

Hello there! I am an Italian scriptwriter and film director. I gave a look to some of your articles and given your experience I would like to ask you a simple question. I am recording a sitcom here in Italy. Sound is recorded separately on a minidisc. Do you think that the audio chain fishpole and mic-mixer-minidisc recorder needs a compressor before inputting the signal to the recorder or that is rather suggestable to do that (using a compressor) in post production? Do some audio recording technicians use a compressor while recording dialogue?

Awaiting your reply.

So good to see Randy Thom's comments in such proper context. Would that more directors would read, mark and inwardly digest. One thing to think about.. if someone inadvertantly knocks the douser closed, how long before the audience gets restive? If the sound goes out, how long then. What does that say about which is more important for telling the story?

Good site!

Dear Sven

Just came across your site for the first time this evening, congratulations on a terrific job. As a freelance re-recording mixer of 11 Imax films I am
always on the look-out for tips and advice from the
"greats" in our industry.

Its gets harder and harder to learn new techniques when working, I think this is due to a combination of several factors; from egos and not being able to ask your peers -- to we've all just got to pay the rent and are just to busy. But with these wonderful articles you've compiled I believe that I have many happy hours of learning ahead of me.

While researching for an new Imax (I was just hired onto this week), I was looking for any Walter Murch wisdom and found your site.

Thank you for this wonderful repository of data that
we can all learn from. Your at the top of my research "favorites" from now on!

Hi -

I am currently creating my own site sonicstrategies.com, and will let you know when it's up and running. I have an enormous number of educational ideas in this area (many described in my book), and have noticed a consistent plea for more teaching in the area of aesthetics of sound design, not just technical info which is abundant. I'm hoping to offer seminars wherever I can find interest, and if you have any suggestions as to who and where I may propose this, that would be most appreciated.
Keep up the excellent work and I look forward to more contributions to your site.
